Extension privacy policy

Last updated September 26, 2026

This policy covers the openRecruiter extension for Google Chrome (“the extension”). It explains what the extension collects, why, and what happens to it. Your use of the openRecruiter web app at openrecruiter.co is covered by that service's own terms.

What the extension does

It shows information about the person whose LinkedIn or GitHub profile you have open — contact details, work history, and developer activity — from your openRecruiter account, and lets you look up new people and save them to lists.

What it collects

  • The address of the profile you're viewing. On www.linkedin.com and github.com profile pages, the extension reads the page's address (for example linkedin.com/in/…) to identify the person and sends it to openRecruiter to check whether you already have them on file. It does not read the page's content, and it does nothing on any other website.
  • Your API key and account email. Stored in Chrome's extension storage on your device so you stay signed in. The key is sent only to openrecruiter.co, to authenticate your requests.
  • Your actions in the extension: lookups you confirm, lists you create or add to, and your display settings. These are saved to your openRecruiter account.

The extension does not collect your browsing history beyond the profile addresses above, and it does not use analytics, advertising, or tracking code of any kind.

Personal information about the people you look up

The extension displays personal information about other people — names, job history, email addresses and phone numbers. When you confirm a paid lookup, openRecruiter requests that information from data providers on your behalf and stores the result in your account, where it is available to you in the web app. You are responsible for using contact details lawfully, including under privacy and anti-spam laws that apply to you and to the people you contact.

Who it is shared with

  • openRecruiter, which runs the service the extension connects to.
  • Data providers, only when you confirm a lookup: the profile address is sent to them to find the person's information.

We do not sell data collected by the extension or use it for advertising.

Limited Use

The use of information received from the extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide the extension's features described above; it is not transferred for any other purpose, not used to determine creditworthiness or for lending, and not read by people except with your permission, for security, or where the law requires it.

Security

All communication between the extension and openrecruiter.co is encrypted with HTTPS. Your API key never leaves your device except in requests to openrecruiter.co, and you can revoke it at any time in Settings → API keys.

Deleting your data

  • Signing out of the extension removes your API key and email from the browser.
  • Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stored in the browser.
  • To delete data saved to your openRecruiter account, email privacy@openrecruiter.co.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the date above. Material changes will be announced in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing before they take effect.
